COVID 19 – What are we doing ?

Here at The Old Rectory  we are all working together to keep each other safe.

  • At the beginning of March, we locked down our home to all visitors. This meant that we were not able to have any family and friends to visit. However, we like everyone else have adjusted to a new way of life, relatives now come to the home and talk to their loved ones through the window and also external garden visits adhering to the 2 meter distancing.

  • Our staff members are supporting residents to stay in touch with their families via WhatsApp and Skype face time and ensure that activities such as themed days, VE day celebrations and Easter bonnet competition help keep everyone occupied. The residents have been enjoying sitting in the sun gardening. We continue our relationship with the local nursery through video call story time. Happy hour is still proving to be popular as is the tuck shop. Some of our residents have been writing personalised letters to their families.

  • Any professional entering The Old Rectory has to complete a health questionnaire, have their temperature taken and their oxygen levels checked. If these are all ok, they have to then wash their hands, put a mask on and only then can they enter. Staff take additional precautions to protect the residents by getting changed into their uniforms when they arrive in the building before they go to see the residents.

  • Staff wear masks all the time when on shift, this is to help to try and prevent the chance of any spread of infection. They also put on aprons and gloves when assisting residents as an added precaution. We have plenty of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) within the building and a good reliable supply chain so PPE has not been an issue for us. We do have visors and goggle should a resident show signs of Covid, to provide additional protection for our staff.

  • All staff are tested for Covid every week and all the residents are tested every 28 days as well (though this is constantly being reviewed). At the time of testing everyone’s result came back as clear. We have systems in place so that any resident or staff member showing possible signs of Covid can be retested within hours.

  • We are continuing with our rigorous and thorough daily cleaning to eliminate microbes on floors, surfaces and soft furnishings.

  • We have multiple hand sanitising and hand washing locations and we are ensuring these areas are well stocked throughout each day and used by staff and residents.

  • Our management team have held regular discussions with staff to ensure that everybody is clear on the importance of good personal hygiene, regular hand washing and the correct use and disposal of PPE to protect everybody in the building. This has been reinforced with all staff completing Covid-19 training. Residents are also kept informed of what we are doing and why.

  • We will continue with our rigorous hygiene measures until we are certain that COVID-19 no longer poses a threat to the safety of our residents and staff, and we will follow and go above and beyond the expectation of Public Health England and CQC guidelines.

  • What would we do if we get Covid-19? All residents will self-isolate in their bedrooms for 14 days, and staff will provide care in the way they would for any airborne infection, working closely with the local infection control team and Public Health England. This is something our staff have been fully trained to deal with as part of their job role.

The safety of our residents and our staff is absolutely paramount. As we continue to monitor the situation and follow all guidance from our local authority and Public Health England, we would like to remind you of the following guidelines that will help protect the home and yourselves.

  • Cover your mouth with your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
  •

Space

  • Make space - stay at least 2 meters apart.
